Project Name: 2023 City-Wide Chip/Crack Sealing
Contractor: Klickitat County Public Works Department
Description of Project: Road wear and cracks come in all shapes and sizes, and no pavement is immune to cracking. If left untreated, those cracks are only the start of more significant problems, from potholes all the way to sub-base failure. The city-wide crack sealing, or preparation for chip sealing (to be scheduled in July), will start three days in May on a variety of roads that are in good, fair, and poor condition, as identified by the Washington State Transportation Improvement Board.
Crack Sealing Crack sealing is the process of placing an adhesive sealant into cracks on the pavement surface, preventing the infiltration of moisture and non-compressible materials into the pavement. Why is crack sealing done? It is a cost-effective pavement preservation treatment that can slow pavement’s deterioration and extend pavement life by three to five years. A crack-sealed road can be opened to traffic almost immediately when a de-tacking agent is used.
Chip Sealing Chip sealing is a thin film of heated asphalt liquid sprayed on the road surface, followed by the placement of small aggregate ("chips"). The chips are then compacted to orient the chips for maximum adherence to the asphalt, and excess stone is swept from the surface. This protects the pavement from the effects of sun and water, increases skid resistance, fills small cracks and other surface defects. Why is chip sealing done? A chip seal is about one fourth to one fifth the cost of a conventional asphalt overlay and extends the life of asphalt pavement by 5 to 7 years, which varies with the type and amount of daily traffic.
