Job Opening - Public Works Maintenance Worker - I, II, or III
The City of White Salmon is seeking a qualified candidate to join its Public Works team as a Public Works Maintenance Worker I, II, or III. This is a full-time, union, non-exempt position offering competitive pay and benefits. The role involves a mix of hands-on fieldwork and administrative tasks, making it an ideal opportunity for individuals who enjoy both physical labor and technical problem-solving.
Salary Ranges
- Maintenance Worker I: $25.34 - $33.06 (2025 Range 30, Step 1-10)
- Maintenance Worker II: $27.97 - $36.49 (2025 Range 34, Step 1-10)
- Maintenance Worker III: $30.87 - $40.28 (2025 Range 38, Step 1-10)
Job Overview
Under the supervision of the Public Works Operations Manager, this role involves maintaining and operating essential city infrastructure, including:
- Operate and maintain water distribution systems within and beyond city limits.
- Monitor, operate, and troubleshoot a slow sand treatment plant, wells, pump stations, and lift stations using SCADA systems.
- Maintain wastewater and stormwater collection systems.
- Repair and improve city streets, sidewalks, and public rights-of-way.
- Assist in the maintenance and enhancement of city parks and public spaces.
Work Environment & Equipment
This role involves both outdoor fieldwork and indoor office tasks. Employees will operate:
- Heavy equipment, motor vehicles, and hand tools.
- Office equipment, including computers, tablets, and digital cameras.
- Work may be conducted in hazardous environments such as confined spaces, steep terrain, or noisy construction sites.
Qualifications
Education: High school diploma or GED required.
Experience: Public Works or construction experience preferred.
Licenses & Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license; ability to obtain a Class B CDL within 18 months.
- Washington State Water and/or Wastewater Certification (or ability to obtain within 18 months).
- Washington State Flagger Certification (or ability to obtain within 18 months).
Skills & Abilities:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
- Ability to learn and enforce safety standards.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Adaptability to changing job requirements and ability to work in inclement weather.
- Physical ability to lift, shovel, push, pull, and carry heavy loads as needed.
