White Salmon Resident Awarded AWC Scholarship

Jacob Lockman, the City of White Salmon’s nomination for the Association of Washington Cities’ Center for Quality Communities scholarship, has been selected to receive a $1,500 scholarship award.

The scholarship is awarded to up to six Washington state students who have been actively engaged with their community and/or city government and plan to attend post-secondary school in Fall 2021.

Lockman’s active involvement in his community spans not only school activities but also civic engagement. He served as a Washington State House of Representative Page, participated in Leadership Enterprise for a Diverse America (LEDA), created a COVID-19 project initiative, participated in RoboFlight Academy Summer Engineering Programs as a student and mentor, and referees soccer games; all in addition to his high school obligations. Lockman was also named a 2021 National Scholar by the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans – one of four scholars from Washington and Oregon to receive the scholarship and one of 106 recipients nationally.

“I believe that a meaningful life is living not for myself but cultivating good fellowship and empathy for others in my community. The rewards lie not in what I get from growth but in what I become because of it,” Lockman stated in his application essay.

The Center for Quality Communities is a 501(c)(3) organization sponsored by the Association of Washington Cities to promote civic engagement and provide the public with a better understanding of the role cities and towns play in Washington.

Several remarkable students have received White Salmon’s nomination in previous years; Lockman is the first White Salmon nominee to be awarded the scholarship.
